To climb the vulcano in daytime no need for a guide. For the sunset if the sky is clear no guide needed. But if it is cloudy and night - get a guide. Extremly loud city due to the crazy motobikers.

i thought Berastagi is a nice and cool place to rest after climbing down Mt Sibayak. you can enjoy some local foods at night along the main street, have some best coffees and ginger tea..if you're into chinese noodles..you may have it near the market..for those who like fresh milk from the barn, yoghurt, cheese or dairy products...go to Gundaling..about 20- 30 mins from Central Berastagi.

Definitely do the small trek to Gunung Sibayak.

Definitely do the small trek to Gunung Sibayak. It's totally worth it just for the natural scenery and the volcanic craters, and lucky you if you can catch the sunrise there, though it's usually foggy early in the morning. (You can do the trek without a guide, but you have to arrange your transport, which isn't much cheaper than the guide). Check out the hot springs as well, they're very nice and relaxing, and the surroundings are very pretty. Besides this, there's a nice Buddhist Temple, a Karo Church, a Ghost Town(near Gunung Sinabung) all within 30 minutes bike ride from the centre which are all worth a visit. Within the town, do check out the local markets, and you'll see a lot of fresh Indonesian produce you might not have ever heard of. The people are all super nice too, and they'll usually let you(or rather, insist that you) try some. Finally, if you're up for an hour long bike ride, do check out Sipiso-Piso waterfall, one of the tallest in Asia. The hike down is worth it. Though if you're planning to go to Lake Toba via private transport, you can stop there on your way. PS: Stay at Smiley's Homestay. They're lovely people who'll make you feel right at home <3

Berastagi is perfect for a stop over between Ketambe/Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba. Actually the city is not very nice but people are friendly and the landscape around is impressive. There are two volcanos for trekking and hot springs

The visit to Mt Sibayak was the highlight.

The visit to Mt Sibayak was the highlight. The hot springs were also enjoyable. Berstagi was a hill station for the Dutch and a number of Dutch houses can be seen on the hills overlooking the town. It is not as architecturally rich as hill stations in India but still interesting. If I was going again I would an extra day and include a walk to Mt Sinabung,

Stayed 5 nights from 7th June to 13th June. A Heartfelt thanks to Pak Azman, Ibu Effi, Saiful and Suvana who manage the homestay. Always patient, caring and being a wealth of reservoir of information. Especially making arrangements to travel from Medan airport to Sibayak Hike and other local attractions such as Sikulikap Waterfalls, Sipisoso waterfall, Dokan Village, hot springs and trip to Lake Toba. A Special thanks to Ibu Effi who cooled for us 2 nights straight. A home away from home. Wishing to return soon...if not Sooner.

Great location, beautiful surroundings, great staff. The reception and staff were most welcoming and helpful, first impressions of a beautiful and amazing hotel. Everything about this hotel is great. It was clean, stylish, roomy with excellent service where we had breakfast. The food is good and value for money, and the service is attentive and efficient. The room itself is well equipped and comfortable. I am very happy with my visit. I look forward to returning for a longer visit in the future.

The outstanding hospitality of the host was amazing even for Indonesian people. You will not get bored in Berastagi when you stay there. They will give you many great tips, where and what to eat, where to go, what to do and they organized a great sunrise tour to Mt. Sibayak for us. The breakfast was delicious and they were able to provide vegan options for us. Last but not least, the value for the price is unbeatable! We highly recommend this place!!!

Hotel Lobby was very well furnished in the traditional Indonesian style with plenty of wooden and natural furnishing. Room was of a large size and tastefully decorated with a big balcony outside with lovely scenery of the countryside. Overall we find the hotel to be of good value for money for the price we pay. One of the best hotel in Berastagi. The Roof Top Restaurant was a good place to eat and relax in beautiful surrounding with nice views.

We absolutely LOVED our stay, Cecilia and Smiley are such lovely hosts and we would absolutely recommend their place to anyone staying in Berastagi! Cecilia is an amazing cook and prepared delicious breakfast for us, and Smiley took us on a hike to the volcano and knew so many facts, we had the best day out with him. The room itself was great, the beds were so comfy and we slept really well :)

Para para is set among farmland, a 30 minute walk out of Berastagi town. The restaurant and family room are designed in traditional Karo style and beautifully constructed. The restaurant was open from 11am to 9pm and serves a small range of well prepared and tasty dishes. The staff are very friendly and use google translate to communicate in English.

The location is strategic, in front of 2 major hotels and resort. A lot of restaurants can be found within walking distance. The house is still well-maintained, not damp, probably because it gets a lot of morning sunshine. Bathrooms are clean.
