Aizu is a perfect spot for a 2-3 day trip. I liked particularly the castle, which is just gorgeous now in winter. And I bet it is beautiful also in other seasons as well. On top of that I enjoyed other attractions too.

This is a great place, and all the sites are in a roughly 10 kilometer circle from the station. I put my suitcase in a locker at the station for the day, then rented a bicycle for ¥500 from a shop 800 meters from the station. (Turn right at the street in front of the station. The shop is on the left 800 meters down.) I realized later that there is a tourist bus that stops at all the sites and has a running commentary on where you are. That would have been more practical for me. The bus costs ¥600 yen for a day pass, which can be bought at the bus station in front of the train station.

Very short visit prior to a ski week.
Very short visit prior to a ski week. It is conveniently located and easily accessible via trains or buses. The city isn't too big and explorable on foot. Locals are very friendly and helpful. We had such a wonderful time at a local Izakaya even with our little Japanese. We were recommended a few dishes and they were all so delicious.

Loved Tsuruga Castle (Teahouse garden ticket does not...
Loved Tsuruga Castle (Teahouse garden ticket does not include tea drink) and Sazaedo Temple (escalator ramp is worth it). Oyakuen Gardens is not worth the entrance fee during late fall and winter (herb garden is dead). A Ryokan and onsen experience is a must at Aizuwakamatsu (Shosuke no Yado Takinoyu was awesome). Also made our own Akabeko (red cow) at Akabeko Maker Bandokoro. All in all, a wonderful 1 night trip to get away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo traffic. P.S. So without any choice, we wanted to cancel it with full refund. A staff said OK and made a room reservation at other hotel for us. But now the hotel said we will be given only 20% of the price. It is wrong, unfair, injustice and dishonest. We have traveled in Japan multiple times and like Japan very much. But this case makes me sick of Japan. I want full refund. That is Japanese justice.

The onsen on the top floor had beautiful views - we were lucky enough to be surrounded by a beautiful winter landscape. The lounge with free drinks (including sake and umeshu) were a nice touch! And we did enjoy the buffet breakfast and dinner a lot - the quality surpassed our expectations for a hotel buffet. It was really yummy and plenty of choice, always fresh. Very nice place for families or if you want to explore the cute little city of Aizu-wakamatsu
