Weligama, with its enchanting coastal charm, offers an array of memorable spots that can become instant favorites for any visitor. Among these, the picturesque Weligama Bay stands out, renowned for its gentle surf and panoramic views, making it an idyllic spot for both surfers and those looking to soak in the serene beach atmosphere. Another favorite is the iconic Taprobane Island, accessible at low tide, offering a unique glimpse into a secluded and luxurious retreat with its lush tropical gardens and historical mansion.
Dining in Weligama is a delightful experience, with a plethora of options ranging from local street food stalls serving delectable seafood and traditional Sri Lankan fare, to more upscale dining experiences by the beach, where you can enjoy fresh, grilled seafood while watching the sunset. The Roti Shop, a quaint local eatery, is particularly notable for its mouthwatering selection of rotis filled with an array of flavors, providing a taste of local cuisine that's both authentic and affordable.
Getting around Weligama is relatively straightforward, thanks to its compact nature and the availability of various transport options. Tuk-tuks are ubiquitous and offer a convenient and economical way to explore the town and its surroundings. For those looking to cover longer distances or explore at their own pace, renting a scooter or a bicycle can be an excellent choice, providing the freedom to discover hidden gems along the coast.
On a subsequent visit to Weligama, one might consider avoiding the more crowded, commercialized spots during peak tourist season, to preserve the tranquil experience that Weligama is known for. Additionally, being cautious about engaging with overly persistent vendors or unofficial tour guides can help avoid any uncomfortable situations, ensuring a more enjoyable and authentic experience of this beautiful coastal town.

Relaxing beach for surfing, beach walks, beach games & family time together.
Safe beach area & you get lots of nice cafes and restaurants to try out with a good range of food & drinks with music to enjoy. We really enjoyed Ceylon Sliders as our brunch spot & Cheeky monkey for dinner with some super cool music. Kurumba bay is super cool too for a range of food choices.

You go to Weligama to learn surfing, or otherwise use the beach.
Otherwise the place is maybe a bit too chaotic, dirty, and loud for European travellers ;)
There is garbage collection, but still a lot of garbage is lying around and ending up in the sea.

Weligama is small town.
Weligama is small town. We lived little outskirts in rural area, Weligama is cheaper than other distinations such as Mirissa nearby. However if one needs to party and need restaurants then you cannot find many at Weligama.
We were looking for quiet, relaxed and comparitively cheaper 15 days break between our two months vacation and Weligama helped us with same. Mirissa beach is more better and lively than Weligama Beach. However small section of beach near Cape Weligama resort via Kumbalgama junction is quiet and peaceful.
Having your own or rented vehicle is definitely plus point or else one has to hire Tuktuk to Mirissa which may cost 1000-1400 LKR To and Fro dependinging on your bargaining skills.
Once can definitely go to both mirissa, unwatuna and galle from Weligama on day excursions.

Weligama beach itself is very crowded and not very clean; however, there are amazing and practically empty beaches just a few minutes away. Options for restaurants like almost everywhere is a hit and miss, but I did find amazing and varied options for very good prices.
The view overlooking my room was fantastic! The bed was big and comfy too. Danushka went above and beyond to help with my needs while staying in Weligama. The location of the place is a bit of a walk going over to the main road, I would recommend renting a motorbike if you would be visiting the central town and Weligama Bay frequently where majority of all the cafe's/restaurants are. The neighborhood is quiet and the people are friendly. The WiFi here is fast compared to the rest of the places Ive stayed in Sri Lanka.
we were the only guests because it is now off season. They were doing some additions and improving garden and roof area so it will definitely be nice and ready for next season. Room was really nice and clean, sheets had some stains but I guess you just have to get used to that in Sri Lanka. 23 minutes by foot to center of weligama. don’t book accommodations weeks ahead if you planing to go here off season (may-Oktober). we payed 130$ more in comparison how much it would be we, if we have booked it few days before.
Relaxed home-stay atmosphere at Namal's place with everything you need for an enjoyable stay. Sudu's cooking was delicious, we had breakfast and dinner here - some of the best curry we have tried during our time in Sri Lanka! Great views across Weligama from the upper level restaurant and rooftop terrace. Free chilled drinking water too. Namal made us feel very welcome in his home, like part of the family. We had a great time, thank you! Nic and Sam from Scotland x
Perfect Location right at the beachfront. Not too busy area in between Weligama downtown and Mirissa. Some very good foodplaces in walking distance. You can rent a surfboard if you want. We stayed even one Night longer than planned because of the relaxed atmosphere. They serve Sri Lankan and English Breakfast. The owner offered us a fresh fish at the evening for dinner, which was great.
I was planning a fee days and ended up staying more than a week. I felt so comfortable. I was at home. Irish, the owner, would come everyday to check we were good, cleaning the common areas, checking if we needed something…
He would stay and tall with us. Felt like a friend. I was sad when leaving and if I visit again Sri Lanka, Weligama Bay House is my comfort place.
Loved our stay at Santi Beach House Weligama. The villa was right on the beach and we woke up each morning to the sound of the waves.
After a terrible night before at the previous villa, it was a treat to finally have a massive comfy bed to sleep in.
Santi was hidden gem in Weligama as it was the only place we found with character and charming Sri Lankan design.
Our stay at Weligama Watergate Resort was a true delight. The standout feature was undoubtedly the breakfast, offering a delectable array of Sri Lankan dishes. The owner's personalized attention added a special touch to our experience. Nestled in serene surroundings, this resort offers a tranquil retreat in Weligama. Highly recommended for a memorable stay.
The location is great - just in front of Weiligama surfing point. The room is very nice — king bed, conditioner, hot water. it’s also has a wide space in bathroom. The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially Weere, manager of this hotel. For breakfast you can choose from 4 options, and pineapple pancakes are delicious!
My family absolutely loved our stay at this hotel. The staff went over and beyond our expectations. They catered to our every need. The tailored our meals, and made sure we were always happy. They even set up a dinner on the beach for us to celebrate Christmas Eve. We would definitely visit this property again in the future!
It was amazing. The staff is the best I have ever met. The restaurant food and service was very impressive. The location of the hotel is exactly what I wanted. When I return to Sri Lanka again, and if I want to stay in the south of the island, then only at the Hotel Scenic Bay Weligama. Highly recommend this wonderful place!
The house is completely new and beautiful. It was so much better than we expected. The owner made us feel welcomed and he was very helpful as well. My friend and I stayed one month totally in Sri Lanka in a few different accommodations, but The Moose Weligama was the best accommodation where we stayed.
Sleek, modern design that offered incredible views over Weligama Bay from both our room and private balcony. We only stayed for one night before we headed home from our two week honeymoon in Sri Lanka but didn't want to leave. The food was excellent and the bar/pool area by the beach was lovely.
Tinara River Resort is beautifully situated in a quiet spot on the river, providing peace and quiet only a short walk from the action on the beach. Nicely designed, the property and your hosts are full of warm Sri Lankan charm and truly want you to enjoy your stay to the fullest.
Lovely hotel, with very friendly staff. Rooms have a view of the ocean so you can check the waves without even leaving bed! The surf hire/lesson places are less than 50m from the front door. Good massages too, the therapist called Tharushi was very professional.
Very nice and brand new hotel/ hostel with super nice and care-ring hosts! Makes sure to be there Monday’s to join the family curry night. Super delicious! It is only two steps away from the beach and within walking distance to everywhere in Weligama.
Location that was the main thing bcz the sea view so the hotel was in great location and the room was very comfortable and the staff they always ready to help so best hotel in weligama so I got a great experience thank you Centhara
The hotel was right on the beach- walking straight into the water. The breakfast was good if you order the Sri lankan one. The pool is amazing. The staff was very easygoing and helpfull.
The staff and the owners are super friendly and helpful. The hotel is surrounded by surfing schools and is on the street near everything you’d need as a visitor.
