Warm, welcoming, fantastic room with a great view.
Situated in the heart of Serra da Estrela mountain range, these unique accommodations were born in the full reconstruction of an ancient water mill and an olive oil mill.

We spent 3 nights here at end November, the weather was pretty wet so we didn't do much walking. Enjoyed a Cheese-tasting evening, visits to the Thermal Baths and quick visits to the 2 wool factories. There's a surprising amount to do and see, we loved it.

A small town in the mountains.
A small town in the mountains. When visiting some places nearby one needs to be cautious about the roads as many mountain roads are pretty narrow even for small cars and one may need to reverse in case of traffic coming from in front. During off-season periods many Restaurants are closed.

If you love long hikings, walks, the mountains you are in the right place. There you can really have great hiking sessions and walks. For the real deal you will need a guide and I highly recommend that you make a whole day Jeep Tour with lunch. This kind of programm is something that you don't want to miss in this area of Serra da Estrela. This is a place that you need to take the correct equipment for walking and hiking, the right shoes etc. It can rain a lot so you need proper waterproof clothing. It can get really cold there, so under waterproof clothing you need functional skin breathing active clothing. For the walks and hikings I do not recommend any clothing around cotton or woole. This location is great for active people and active families who love the nature and the amazing views that you can get there. They have there in Manteigas few restaurants, but keep in mind that it is a small village, so I would not recommend a stay larger than 1 week.

Manteigas is a not a place most tourists seem to hear about and, surprisingly, not a place which many Portuguese from the South of Portugal seem to visit. The variety of things to do in the area are wonderful. Whether you like winter sports of skiing and snow-shoeing to bicycling, fishing, camping, hiking in the Spring, Summer or Fall there are any number of activities year-round.

This place was such a pleasant surprise, despite a couple of white knuckle moments navigating the rather narrow and winding road leading down to the town from the main mountain road. The roads in Manteigas are much narrower than what we’re used to, but it’s relatively easy to get around if you take it slow. Enjoyed some excellent local cheese, charcuterie and wine at Queijaria Manteigas. Don’t miss the tour of the Burel Woolen factory, which is very interesting. Their gift shop has something for everyone.
honestly, I loved everything about this place! we absolutely enjoyed the gorgeous view over breakfast and the fireplace in the evening. The hospitality was beyond anything I experienced in typical hotels. it felt like we were taken care by family. Our toddler son was in love with the place and the owners :)
the house is newly built, all wood, so it has a nice mix of being cozy and clean but without too much of the oldy-mouldy mountain village feel. the location is convenient, short drive to the village and sights.
Booked a one night stay here during a road trip through Portugal. I had very high standards for this stay as it's somewhere I'd been wanting to stay at for quite some time. The design of the hotel along with the views from our room were the absolute highlights. The restaurant was also beautiful and the food really tasty - a few more vegetarian options would have been welcome.
Our room was from the first part of the house…..16th Century! We felt like we had stepped back in time…..a very special, historical house with a great “secret” room. The pool area across the house was such pleasant way to spend a lazy afternoon! We nibbled on some of the low hanging figs!. Fantastic neighborhood…….Our favorite stay during our two week Portugal trip!
This hotel is the perfect base for three days of walking in the surrounding hills. The view from the room puts you in the right frame of mind then the hearty breakfast sets you up for an active day. Everything was calean and tidy. The tourist information office next to the hotel have a complete catalogue of well illustrated local walks.
This was our third stay at the Hotel Berne. We like everything about it - it's a very friendly, family-run hotel, with an easy-going yet efficient feel to it. It's clean, light and airy with great views and a super pool to relax in after walking in the mountains. Patrícia, Rafael and Marco are always very welcoming. We'll be back.
The rooms are very clean and elegantly decorated, with a combination of old Portuguese architevture and shick modern design. Breakfast was great and the Manteigas is beautiful. Elsa (the owner) is funny and welcoming and equipped with an abundance of travel knowledge about portugal and is more than happy to share it!
Decent sized room with tea and coffee making facilities nearby, with cake and biscuits also provided. Good hot shower with decent flow. Comfortable bed. Decent continental breakfast provided. Friendly staff. Location of hotel at the edge of town was quiet.
The house is very cozy and the staff is very friendly, I highly recommend this hotel.
Dona Teresa was very friendly and helpful!
It was very kind of her showing the museum inside the house and telling us the family story.
Highly recommended
Warm and inviting hotel in a truly beautiful setting. By far the friendliest and most welcoming hosts I have ever known. I could not recommend staying here enough, and I will definitely be coming back.
Butiful hotel, quiet location and accessible everywhere, 5 minutes from the center. The hostess went above and beyond to assist with any request and assistance with information and tours in the area.
The hotel is beautifully decorated and is very comfortable. Breakfast is plentiful and delicious. The massage we had was terrific. Staff were always nice and helpful.
