Monsanto has been the highlight of our trip to Portugal and Spain so far. It is so authentic and real, the buildings are amazing and the views are outstanding. The walk up to the Castle is a little challenging but so worth the effort. We were there for the medieval festival and were made very welcome by the locals and we had some memorable times there. If you are in the Douro Valley, make the effort to head to Monsanto if you want to visit an authentic and historic village.

Monsanto is the most unique small town we visited on our 3wk trip to Portugal. You can start to see the massive boulders from the base of the hillside and then it's 5 km straight up winding narrow road. You will need your host to show you where to park.

It is a good idea to book a place for the night.

It is a good idea to book a place for the night. The views are so incredible and unique you will want to experience day and night in amongst the boulders. There is a wonderful hike to the ruins above the boulder village. There is spectacular lighting in the evening. The village is quite out of the way for travelling. This was our second visit to Monsanto so we knew to book for the night. Lots of unique places to eat. We ate at our hosts' spot and it was great. Once you arrive amongst the boulders, you don't have to leave until your stay is over. You can find all you need there.

Very unique. Great trekking up to the fort (short but steep). We really enjoyed the “rock village”. Our meal at Pestitos and Granitos was delicious. We recommend Monsanto fro those looking for a unique experience.

It's a very peaceful place with lots of great views and we found a lovely bistro to eat at. Some of the roads are very steep and you have to park and walk so for someone not so good on their feet this wouldn't be suitable

Very nice place, surrounded by nature: the perfect place to relax in the shade of the trees overlooking the orchard. Actually one could spend there days without realising time passing by and without feeling the need to go away. The hosts were super kind and helpful. Breakfast was very very good, with local products, homemade bread and fruit from the orchard. I would have had dinner there too (considering that Monsanto doesn't offer anything good), but there's no such service. Everything else was perfect.

Very good location, very kind owners, very typical house, great place to spend some days, well furnished and equipped! Just lovely. If you visit Monsanto it is an awesome place to rest and to prepare for the climb to the castle. On other opportunities I'll try to return. The space is huge, there is a space to cook, you can step outside and have a nice view of the valley, the windows are protected with mosquito nets and it had AC

Very good location. Hotel street (Fernando Namora) too narrow to drive or park, best to park when you get there at the 6 or 8 space car park when you start seeing the first cafe. It is maybe 100 meters walk uphill to the hotel, okay with carry-on size luggage. Minimal breakfast with juice, tea/coffee, cheese, meat slices, bread rolls, and jam. Contrary to description, no outlet accessible from bedstand and no hair dryer.

Everything was fabulous!! Monsanto is so quaint and unique... a must experience once in a lifetime. Elena was so kind and helpful... in every way! She muscled our luggage almost single-handedly to help get it from our car to the house... unbelievable! I cannot possibly endorse this lodging choice any higher - no words descriptive enough to endorse a stay here at the Sunset House!!! So remarkable!!
