Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Esta muy bien situado para conocer Chester, a 10 minutos del centro. Los anfitriones muy amables y simpaticos, pudimos dejar las maletas antes de la hora del checkin. El desayuno estupendo. Para las habitaciones hay que subir escaleras. Las camas comodas aunque el edredon justo...no se si sera costumbre. Y al lado encontramos un pub, The Saddle Inn, con patio y musica en directo, ideal para terminar una tipica noche inglesa.

Está en el medio de la ciudad y facilita hacer turismo sin necesidad de coger ningún transporte público. También tiene un aire muy tradicional y de lujo, aunque ya se nota el paso del tiempo. A propósito, para conocer la ciudad os aconsejo un paseo por la muralla. En la Oficina de Turismo te venden una mini-guía echa por ellas (en muchos idiomas) que te cuenta lo que te vas encontrando en ese paseo. Lo aconsejo muy encarecidamente. Merece la pena.
