On a road trip through Devon and Cornwall to see gardens and historic homes, we found the grounds and the common rooms of the hotel to be lovely. Keep in mind - those are free to see and do not require an expensive stay. A few glitches during the stay were later written to the hotel management who took the time to respond with apologies for the concerns and used those to help prepare for future guests. I would suggest taking the time to look at the website for room choices and consider booking directly with the hotel where staff can answer questions on costs, accommodations and expectations.

Rooms were very well appointed with breath taking views across fields to Dartmoor it is a peaceful and idyllic spot. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were a good size; they were very clean and had a homely feel. There were plenty of plug sockets, a TV and tea and coffee making facilities which we took advantage of. There was plenty of storage, although we didn't need this as we only stayed 1 night as we were attending a wedding.
The bathroom was spacious with a shower over the bath. We all took a shower in the morning and there was plenty of hot water. Toiletries were provided.
There was free WiFi also. The room felt secure as there was a yale lock and we had a key for each room.
We were able to park our car easily and the instructions given via text prior to our arrival, by Angela, were extensive we used Google Maps as our navigation and found the property easily.
We arranged our breakfast the day before. Angela was extremely welcoming and friendly, a perfect hostess. Breakfast was amazing - full English with a choice of egg types; juice, tea, coffee, toast, cereals, jams - you name it it was on offer - most delicious.

Absolutely amazing views. Very comfortable cottage. And delicious breakfast. Staff very helpful and friendly
Lewdown is a quiet, rural village. You probably wouldn't stay there for itself; I chose Lewdown as it was near to the venue of the course I was attending and it suited me for that reason. The village is set in wonderful countryside.
The landlord (and customers) at the popular Blue Lion Pub were very helpful and gave me very good directions to the B&B as I was somewhat lost/tired after 4 hours of driving!!

The location is great for a gateway to Devon.the staff are very knowledgable about local walks and attractions. The hotel services are second to none, very dog friendly although dogs are not allowed in the restaurant private rooms are made available so dogs do not have to be left in the rooms at meal times. The dinner 3 course menu is worth a try!
We booked a suite which was understandably quite large. In particular the public rooms are very well presented and rather atmospheric. Our room was quite well decorated but some of the furniture rather more worn than atmospheric. The courtyard and tables at the front of the hotel are very nice for pre-dinner drinks. The location is very good as a base as well as being attractive. The staff were generally helpful and supportive.
beautiful hotel. beautiful gardens. lovely countryside. great food. great service. lovely rooms.
The books about the history were fascinating - this house has had a quite amazing history especially with regards to what owners from many many years ago achieved - and made staying there even more special.
I would like especially to thank Ellie who was so friendly, cheerful, helpful, hardworking and efficient.
Very beautiful historic hotel, extremely convenient for a wedding close by. The lovely lady on reception went above and beyond to look after us, even giving us a lift (it was a walkable distance) to the wedding as we had a sudden downpour!
It is a wonderful building with lovely grounds. We found the staff extremely professional and very helpful during our stay. The hotel was extremely clean and very covid compliant. Nice room with a large bathroom. The breakfast was fine.
A beautiful hotel with a wonderful heritage on display throughout the house. It really does feel like a small stately home. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly throughout and our host was very welcoming and attentive.
Lovely hotel - full of character. I had a very comfy 4 poster bed in my room! Breakfast was very good. Lots of choice of cooked items. Great location - lovely garden and views.
