Location excellent, by the station - but I didn't find it noisy.. B'fast good - all I needed. On the edge of town, but close to eateries and small shopping mall. The town's not huge, either.

The private onsen in the room is amazing! The window can be fully opened and we enjoy the mountain view and fresh air so much.
Tachibahana location is great too. We can take a pleasant walk along the Atsui river and experience the mountain village life.

Historical building with a lot of charm. Very close to the start of mount Haguro's ascent. The feeling of being far from the world and in a place of pilgrimage was clear and strong. We had vegetarian temple food and it was delicious: a truly culinary experience. The room was spacious and lovely. If you travel in the fall the house could get a bit chilly but nothing that can't be shaken off by the warm beds, and the very nice shared hot baths!
Also very special and fascinating to participate to the morning prayer. They had an interpreter for us during it and it was much appreciated.

Bedclothes smelled fresh and clean. We slept reasonably well.
A bit marmite : either you don't mind a bit of grubbiness ( apart from bedclothes) and like the good value or it feels too depressing.

I came at the wrong time of year.
I came at the wrong time of year. Gassan was already closed, but it wasn't late enough in the season for momiji. The shuttle bus for Yudonosan only runs on weekends, so next time I'll have to rent a car. There are plenty of public baths and onsens to relax in after exploring the town and climbing mountains!!! I'll have to go again before they harvest the rice fields though. I bet the scenery will be beautiful!!!
