Surrounded by rainforest and mountains, Chateau Backpackers & Motels offers an outdoor fire pit, BBQ facilities. Chris the manager + receptionist of Chateau Backpackers & Motels is just a GREAT HOST! Efficient, kind, generous and prompt to help us with all we needed. We sincerely appreciate his promptness to send us per post on his own costs a super important object (professional working badge) we forgot in our room at the Chateau when leaving to our following accommodation in Queenstown. Definitely awesome!!! We shall certainly come back to Franz Josef when again in New Zealand and we shall reserve once more with Chateau Backpackers & Motels! Last but not least, the daily 6.00 pm Free Soup was incredibly delicious and nutritious :-) Happy New Year Chris + Chateau Backpackers & Motels Team

Punakaiki Beach Hostel has a private room called the Sunset Cottage that sits apart from the hostel and is a lovely little cottage that has a small garden with flowers, a view of the ocean, and beach access within steps. It is very close to the Pancake Rocks, but right down on the beach. The scenery is beautiful! The unit has a small refrigerator, dishes and flatware, glasses, tea cups and mugs, and an actual teapot, tea leaves, and a tea ball, which made this tea lover very happy. There is a funky, but charming table and chairs on the front porch for enjoying a supper while watching the sunset. If you want to cook, there is a well equipped kitchen in the hostel. We highly recommend this spot!

We loved the common area the best. Probably the best kitchen and dining room I've ever seen in a hostel. All perfectly equiped and clean.
