A town of two halves
We booked two nights in Peurto Morelos on our tour of Mexico and Belize, but could have managed with one night as we did not find places of interest close by. The resort has a more relaxed feel than other 'Riviera Maya' locations. The town is split in two - one part by the sea and the other by the main road. I guess the main road part is the real modern Mexico.

Great food in Riviera Maya
Akumal is a small town in the Riviera Maya, between Tulum and Cancún. We loved the fact that it is not as crowded as other beaches. Restaurants that I recommend, Lol Ha which is in Akumal Beach (excellent food). If you go to downtown Tulum, " La hoja verde" is a very good vegetarian restaurant, and prices are very reasonable. After that you can walk North through the street little stores, and you will find a gelato Store, which is great. If you go to beaches in Tulum, go to "Zamas" restaurant where food was very good.

I've stayed at all five of the hotels in this Barcelo resort. I wanted to try the Riviera Maya even though it was more expensive and not positioned on my favorite beach. Overall, the hotel is very pretty, clean, and new. The pool area is nice and the beach was clean. The housekeeping staff and waiters were nice. There were a couple gluten free options at the buffet which was great!

Amazing hotel with super friendly staff! We had an amazing stay at Papaya Playa Project. It’s a beautiful hotel with great eye for details and very very very hospitable. We were helped in such a kind manner; especially by Kiki from guest services and Luiz & Juan from concierge department. We had some trouble with our room so they helped us out and arranged a very nice room instead. I was also injured on my foot due to a slippery road in Tulum and they offered me all the help they could give. Besides the kind people, the food at the restaurant is really great. You should all try the quinoa 🥣 bowl!!! It’s delicious. I would highly recommend this hotel. Make sure you book quite far upfront since it’s very popular!!!
